Unique activity in snow-covered scenery

What makes cross-country skiing so special?

Cross-country skiing gives a unique feeling whether you are doing kilometer after kilometer or if you just taken your first 100 meter. It is a good activity that gives you an excellent workout regardless of your pace. Cross-country skiing can take you to new destinations where you can have warm cup of coffee, tea or chocolate and lunch box while enjoying the wonderful snow-covered nature and scenery.

In the Disko Bay region, you can go skiing anywhere and the environment makes it extra easy and fun regardless of your prior knowledge and experience. Aasiaat have a long tradition of cross-country ski. The ski club ASP was founded in 1970 and have contributed to several professional ski athletes with international careers in Greenland. The town has a trail machine that provides well-groomed cross-country trail from November to May. There are also cross-country ski trails in Tipitooq Lake when there is enough snow on the ice. The ski club has one of Greenland’s largest ski club houses with exceptional facilities and an opportunity to rent ski equipment.

However, there is no need to have a cross-country trail to enjoy the fantastic nature. You can still get an amazing ski experience just by making your own tracks in the pristine snow landscape or use the tracks from the snow mobile and dog sledges. You can find these tracks all over town and villages in the Disko Bay region.

There are a variety types of cross-country ski to choose from. The first one is cross-country ski made for competitions. Then there are skis made for trips where speed is not important. These skis are a bit wider than competition skis and therefore easier to control which gives you an advantage when skiing on the pristine snow. If you are interested in hunting, you can also experience grouse hunting with cross-country ski.

The benefit of cross-country skiing in Disko Bay

The benefit is that snow arrives early which prolongs the winter season (From November to May). Another unique option compared to other tourist destinations in Greenland is that you, in February and March, can ski on the frozen sea surface in Disko Bay. This opportunity makes it possible to do longer or overnight trips if you wish to do so.

In addition to skiing on the frozen sea surface, there is another exotic option. During the summer period you can ski on the glacier in Qeqertarsuaq. Qeqertarsuaq is a spectacular all-year-destination, and it is recommended to experience cross-country ski in summertime. The town also has the longest alpine downhill in Greenland and ski club DSP has a snow groomer that prepares both cross-country trails and tracks.

Qasigiannguit is situated on the mainland and offers stunning scenery and beautiful ski terrain which gives you an opportunity to enjoy cross-country skiing on the tracks of snow mobiles and dog sledges.

I have worked and lived in Norway for 10 years as a professional cross-country skier.

The Ski Club ASP means a lot to me, because it was here I started my cross-country skiing career.
