The Living Village

Experience the way of life of the 17-18th century in the Disko Bay

The living village in Qasigiannguit is a historic revitalization project that works with and conveys the summer everyday life of the 17th-18th century in Disko Bay.

The project aims to create a Greenlandic 18th century village with all that it entails of clothing, housing, kayaks, umiaks and fishing equipment.

A historical revival offers modern man a vivid and incredible picture of the living conditions of the ancestors and thus the opportunity to keep ancient techniques and traditions alive.

The project manager and the m

useum director at the Qasigiannguit Museum, got the idea for the ”living village” in the late 1990’s, inspired by historical revival projects in Scandinavia.

In its dissemination, the project offers a unique opportunity for active participation throughout the year; through the winter’s workshops, courses and workshops with leather work, cutting and sewing, woodwork aswell as play and entertainment, and through the summer’s open workshop activities and revivals in the nature.
