Nestled in the heart of Greenland, Akunnaaq stands as a testament to the soul and originality of this remarkable country. This small village, situated north and only 23 kilometres from Aasiaat.
Akunnaaq is located on an island in its priceless location. In the summertime, the air is filled with the majestic exhales of whales, and the sea stretches out just beyond your doorstep. It’s a place where the rhythms of nature are an integral part of daily life.
Akunnaaq hosts essential community facilities, including a school for educating children, a supermarket for daily needs, a church, medical care access, an administrative center, and a fish factory supporting the local economy.
Access to Akunnaaq is remarkably convenient, despite its remote setting. During the summer, a mere 20 minute boat ride from Aasiaat opens the door to this picturesque village, offering a glimpse into the heart of Greenland’s cultural and natural heritage.
As winter blankets the archipelago in ice (February-April), Akunnaaq transforms into a winter wonderland. The sea ice becomes a thoroughfare for dogsleds and snowmobiles, painting a picture of resilience and adaptability. Occasionally, when the ice is thick enough, daily tours from Aasiaat become possible by snowmobile. In these cold months, when nature’s grip tightens, the village depends on a weekly helicopter service as its vital connection to the outside world.
