ATTU
the southernmost village in qeqertalik municipality
A charming village nestled within the Qeqertalik municipality, population of 196 (2023).
Attu is located about 40 kilometres south of Kangaatsiaq and around 100 kilometres south of Aasiaat,
Attu serves as an important stopover for sailors and hunters traveling to Nassuttooq or returning home after caribou hunting. Its role as a waypoint for restocking oil supplies, it ensures that hunters are well prepared to continue their trips to their final destinations.
Renowned architect Holger Jensen has left his mark on the village with the design of a significant architectural marvel: the local church. Before the church, Attu only had a school chapel.
Attu’s historical significance is further highlighted by a visit from former Queen Margrethe and former Prince Henrik in 1975. The former queen’s presence, marked by a church service and the locals proudly donning national costumes, showcases a harmonious blend of royal connections and local traditions. This event has become a cherished part of Attu’s history, adding a touch of regality to the village’s narrative.

The stopover for hunters
The caribou hunting season kicks off on the 1st of August and extends until the end of October, marking a cherished tradition among many Greenlanders. During this time, individuals engage in hunting activities in Nassuttooq, a 190 km long and narrow fjord situated in West Greenland, particularly popular among hunters and part-time hunters residing in Diskobay.
As they embark on their journey from their towns or settlements, a common stopover is Attu, the last settlement before reaching Nassuttooq. Strolling through the area, one can observe musk ox heads displayed outside houses, and it’s possible to come across polar bear skins.
In addition to the hunting culture, the village’s fishermen play a crucial role in the local economy. They sell their catches, which include the prized fish lumpfish roe, often referred to as the caviar of the north, to the Royal Greenland fish factory in Kangaatsiaq. This fish factory also has a branch in Attu (B-70).
The local economy further benefits from seal and bird hunting activities in the region.
