Qeqertarsuaq is located north of the Arctic Circle. Living north of the Arctic Circle during winter means inhabiting a world of long, dark nights and short, cold days. This entails that during the winter months, the sun doesn't rise above the horizon, and the days are characterized by darkness. This period is called "Kaperlak".
People adapt to a life where natural light is a rare occurrence, and the days are marked by a subdued atmosphere. Many residents take advantage of the few hours of light by spending as much time outdoors as possible, enjoying the rugged, snow-covered landscape. Despite the challenging environment, there is a unique beauty and tranquility that prevails during the polar winter, when the Northern Lights dance across the sky, creating a spectacular display of color and light in the dark polar skies.
After a long period without sunlight, the arrival of the sun is more than welcome to Qeqertarsuaq.
The sun's return around the 13th of January is greeted with warmth and joy, and the population welcomes it by gathering on the cliffs, singing for the upcoming cycle of light that will gradually increase until the midnight sun takes over during the summer months.
