Season of changing colors
The autumn in the Disko Bay means shorter days, as the midnight sun starts setting again. The season starts around in the middle of August, where the colors of nature changes. Autumn in Disko Bay is on fire with blazing colors, crisp days and in the morning, you can experience the beautiful crystals of the rime of the bushes.
Everywhere you look, you see red, yellow, brown, and dark green colors become the dominant colors in the scenery. As the sun starts to set again, the sunsets will give you a heartwarming color that will light up the landscape with its vivid colors and paint the skies with spectacular low-sun hues.
It is also in the autumn the hunting season sets in and the fishing starts up again. Hunting and fishing have been a matter of life and death for thousands of years, and when the hunting season sets in, in August people flock out to go caribou and musk ox hunting.
Nassuttooq (Nordre Strømfjord) is a 190km long fjord and is known as an area with a large number of caribous. A favored hunting area by subsistence hunters as well as recreational hunters. Besides caribou hunting, there are great opportunities for hunting seals, especially ringed seals.
Greenlanders or hunters make sure that no part of the animal goes to waste, they are incredibly resourceful and can make good use of every part of the animal. E.g., the bones of a whale or reindeer antlers are used to make figures called tupilaks, or jewelry e.g., earrings, necklaces, rings etc.
