Qaqqarsuaq

The tall mountain of Qasigiannguit

Qasigiannguit is the only town of Qeqertalik region that is settled on the main land. This means a great back country with endless possibilities – dog sledding, hiking, hunting and spectacular views.

One way to experience the back country of Qasigiannguit is to take a hiking trip to the highest mountain in the area: Qaqqarsuaq. The name literally means “the big mountain”, and it sure is big: About 450 meters above sea level. The hike to the top is not for beginners, but neither the hardest of hikes.

Eitherway you will be rewarded with an amazing view from the top with nothing blocking your eyes. You can see all of Qasigiannguit, spot the icebergs and even see the icefjord of Ilulissat. Furthermore you can catch a glimse of the great ice sheet behind the mountains.

How to get there?

The hike to the top of Qaqqarsuaq begins by the museum in Qasigiannguit and takes you around the highest mountains before going upside Qaqqarsuaq. From the museum you should walk towards the dog areas and then continue along the blue marked route out the city. A few kilometers in, the blue route continues towards the settlement of Nuuk (not Nuuk the capital), but you should take a turn to the left and now follow the orange route. This will take you all the way to the top.

Binoculars brought to the top

When reaching the top, do not hesitate to use the binoculars placed there. The binoculars weigh about 6 kilos and were brought to the mountain by the local sports club – what an effort! Use it to get a closer look at the Ilulissat Icefjord, or maybe spot some whales swimming in Disko Bay. But even without the binoculars, you will get an amazing view from the top.

Be careful on your way down, and be sure to make a few stops on your way to enjoy the beautiful views.

Practical info

  • We recommend to bring water and snacks.
