Winter in Disko Bay
Disko Bay is a magical place to visit in winter. Experience the vast snow-covered landscape, feel the crisp air, the sun and the crackling snow under your feet while, hiking, cross country skiing or dog sledding in the impressive Greenlandic backcountry.
As Disko Bay is located north of the Arctic Circle, you will experience perpetual darkness, polar night in the winter, as you will experience perpetual daylight, the midnight sun in the summer.
The long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights provide many good opportunities to watch the auroral displays. The polar night is a mysterious time where all light comes from the most magical things, such as the moon, the northern lights, and countless stars. On a dark and clear night, you can use the moon, the northern lights, and the countless stars as a source of light – together they can be so bright, that there is no need for artificial lights.
The polar night is best experienced on a dark, and clear night, away from artificial lights from the towns or settlements.
There are no roads connecting towns or settlements in Greenland, but when the sea freezes, it creates roads between the towns and settlements, which creates opportunities to visit the towns or settlements by dog sledding or snowmobiling.
Winter in the Disko Bay is beyond comprehension, where the thousands of islands and the main island is connected by the sea ice.
